Situated in the north-east region of Vietnam, 165 km east of Hanoi, Halong Bay is one of the country's most famous tourist attractions and was listed by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Halong Bay covers a total area of 1,533 square kilometers, including 1,969 islands of various sizes. Among many pleasant beaches, along its winding coastline is Bai Chay in Halong City and the peaceful coves of Cat Ba Island. In the bay, the magnificent limestone outcrops provide the prefect backdrop to swimming or kayaking. A wide variety of birds and animals including bantams, monkeys and iguanas live on the islands. Pearl and coral is also exploited in some areas. With its spectacular beauty, Halong Bay should not be missed during a visit to Northern Vietnam.
Ha Long Bay is world famous for its picturesque seascapes enshrouded year-long in mist. Legend has it that these centuries-old karsts, carpeted in lush greenery, are a gift from heaven and together form a natural fortress to protect the city against unwelcome visitors. When viewed from an elevated distance, the scattering arrangements conjure up an image of a water dragon, and thus the name "Ha Long" which translates as "Bay of Descending Dragons" was given to the area.
